Champali heads field for Turfway's Battaglia
The Enquirer and wire reports
Triple Crown nominees Champali and Grey Comet head the field for today's $100,000 John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway Park.
The 1 1/16-mile Battaglia is the final local prep for the March 22 Grade II $500,000 Lane's End Stakes.
Champali, winner of the Grade III Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs at age 2, won his seasonal debut in the Turfway Prevue and then the WEBN Stakes this year.
New York invader Grey Comet was runner-up in the Aqueduct Whirlaway Stakes.
Leading rider Jason Lumpkins, who has won the last four stakes of the meet, will be aboard Champali, the 8-to-5 morning line favorite who drew the outside post.
Turfway canceled its Friday night card because of weather and an unsafe racing surface.
