Allen boosts Sonics
The Associated Press
SEATTLE - The Seattle SuperSonics are a different team with Ray Allen leading the way - maybe even the hottest team in the league. Allen scored 29 points, Brent Barry had 19 and Rashard Lewis added 17 as the Seattle SuperSonics beat Minnesota 92-83 on Tuesday night, ending the Timberwolves' seven-game winning streak.
The Sonics won their fifth straight and improved to 6-1 since Allen joined the team in a Feb. 20 swap for Gary Payton.
"There's nothing special to our game plan except that we're playing hard, we're playing together and we're having fun," said Allen, who had nine rebounds and six assists.
"Even the guys sitting on the bench, they look out on the floor and see how much fun we're having. Anytime you have that much fun, you just want to be a part of it," Allen said.
Kevin Garnett scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds for Minnesota, but the Sonics held the All-Star game MVP to two points in the fourth quarter. Troy Hudson had 21 and Anthony Peeler 12 for the Timberwolves.
"Over the last 20 games in terms of being aggressive, that's probably the worst we've played," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "Guys played out of character. We were chasing the ball. We didn't run things the way we've been doing it."
The Wolves have been one of the NBA's hottest teams over the past month, but five wins during their streak came at home. They opened a five-game Western Conference trip in Seattle by falling to 13-17 on the road this season.
"I think this makes us the hottest team," Allen said. "We've beaten some good teams here. We went on the road and won. Now, we've got to go on the road and do the same thing. We won tonight and our emotions are high, but now we've got to settle in."
In other NBA games, it was Dallas 88, New Jersey 79, Golden State 107, Indiana 100; Phoenix 104, San Antonio 97; Toronto 89, Washington 86; Milwaukee 100, Miami 91; Detroit 96, Houston 83; Atlanta 92, Denver 86; and New York 89, Cleveland 80.
Dallas 88, New Jersey 79
At Dallas, the Mavericks an offensive force with the NBA's best record, had to turn up the defense.
"We had to toughen up and play playoff basketball, which was good," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "It was a great game to pull out."
Dirk Nowitzki had 24 points and 13 rebounds in what he called "one of the ugliest games we've played all year."
New Jersey, which has struggled since the All-Star break, seemed buoyed by its performance, despite the defeat.
"We tried to make it tough on them and stop them from running," said Kenyon Martin, who had 18 points and nine rebounds in front of his hometown crowd. "For the most part, we did that."
Raptors 89, Wizards 86
At Washington, the Wizards lost Michael Jordan to back spasms. Jordan left with 4:34 remaining in the second quarter after scoring four points in 15 minutes. He was scheduled to be evaluated Wednesday to determine whether he will play in the home game against the Los Angeles Clippers. Jordan hasn't missed a game this season.
Voshon Lenard, 0-for-6 entering the fourth quarter, scored all 14 of his points in the final 12 minutes, and Vince Carter had 24 for the Raptors. Jerry Stackhouse scored 21 points for the Wizards.
Bucks 100, Heat 91
At Miami, Sam Cassell scored 25 points as the Bucks climbed back to .500 and moved one game ahead of Washington for the final playoff berth in the East.
Cassell followed his 28-point outing Sunday against Atlanta with a strong effort against the Heat. Miami played without leading scorer Eddie Jones, who sprained his right ankle in practice Monday.
Suns 104, Spurs 97
At San Antonio, Stephon Marbury had 35 points and 13 assists, and the Suns overcame Tim Duncan's 35-point, 21-rebound performance.
Marbury connected on all six of his 3-pointers and led a Phoenix offensive attack that hit 10-of-13 3-pointers.
The Spurs, who had won four straight, scored the first six points of the fourth quarter and took their first lead at 73-72. But Phoenix answered with an 11-0 run.
Duncan, who made 14 of his 18 field-goal attempts, had his 42nd double-double of the season.
Pistons 96, Rockets 83
At Auburn Hills, Mich., the Pistons broke a seven-game losing streak as Richard Hamilton scored 26 points and Chauncey Billups added 21.
The game was Detroit's first after it finished an 0-5 West Coast trip.
Cuttino Mobley scored 25 points, including 13 in the fourth period, and Yao Ming added 20 for Houston, which has lost four in a row.
Warriors 107, Pacers 100
At Oakland, Calif., Gilbert Arenas had 22 points and nine assists as the Warriors won their sixth straight, the team's longest winning streak in nearly nine years.
The Warriors improved to 30-30, the franchise's first time at .500 since April 24, 1994. That's the same year the organization last reached the playoffs.
Ron Artest had 32 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Jermaine O'Neal added 21 points and six boards for Indiana, which has lost six straight road games.
Golden State's winning streak is the team's longest since winning eight straight in April 1994, when the Warriors finished 50-32. Tuesday's victory gives them their highest win total since going 30-52 in 1996-97.
Knicks 89, Cavaliers 80
At New York, Allan Houston scored 25 points for the Knicks.
Houston scored eight of his points in the fourth quarter, when the Knicks had some trouble shaking off the team with the NBA's worst record.
The Cavs lost for the ninth time in 10 games and dropped to 0-11 on the road against Atlantic Division teams. Ricky Davis, held out of the starting lineup by coach Keith Smart, led Cleveland with 24 points.
Hawks 92, Nuggets 86
At Atlanta, Shareef Abdur-Rahim hit a hook shot before Glenn Robinson made a clinching 3-pointer in the final minute as the Hawks handed Denver its 13th straight loss.
Abdur-Rahim finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds.
Denver has lost 14 in a row on the road, and has not won in Atlanta since 1988. Juwan Howard had 20 points for the Nuggets.
