ATHENS, Ohio - A person walked up to a parked car with two Ohio University students inside and shot them from behind early Sunday, killing one and injuring the other, authorities said.
Terris L. Ross, 23, of Fremont, was killed and Nyerre A. Mays, 21, of East Cleveland, was injured in the shooting about 2:30 a.m. as they sat in a car in the parking lot of the University Commons Apartments, Athens Police Chief Rick Mayer said.
Mays fled the car to an apartment in the off-campus complex that has mostly student tenants and someone inside called police, Athens County Prosecutor C. David Warren said.
Ross, a senior, was found dead in the vehicle, Mayer said. Mays, also a senior, was in fair condition Sunday at Grant Medical Center in Columbus with a gunshot wound to the arm.
Neither student lived at the apartments. No motive had been determined, and police did not have any suspects.
Terry Hogan, dean of students, said university officials tried to help the students' parents and friends cope with the shock on Sunday.
A memorial gathering likely will be held, but details have not been determined, he said.
