Top 25: Tech shocks Texas
By The Associated Press
DALLAS - Nathan Doudney scored a career-high 25 points, mostly on 3-pointers, to help Texas Tech build a 20-point lead before halftime, then the Red Raiders held on to beat No. 3 Texas in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament.
Andre Emmett had 30 points and 11 rebounds and Kasib Powell had 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for the fourth triple-double in school history to give Knight his biggest victory in his two years coaching the Red Raiders (17-11) and ending Tech's 13-game losing skid to Texas.
For Texas (22-6), the loss could hurt its chances of getting a No. 1 seed. The Longhorns had won four straight and eight of nine.
No. 4 Kansas 89, Iowa State 74
DALLAS - Keith Langford and Aaron Miles combined for 35 points in the Jayhawks' victory against Iowa State in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament.
Langford scored 19 points and Miles had 16 as No. 4 Kansas (25-6) loaded up on short shots to advance to Saturday's semifinals against Missouri.
The Jayhawks hit 60 percent of their shots, with Miles going 7-for-10 and Langford hitting 8-of-12. Jeff Graves had a season-high 16, including a one-handed dunk off a rebound, on 7-for-9 shooting.
Jackson Vroman, who had a total of eight points and 11 rebounds in two earlier games against Kansas, led ISU (16-13) with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
No. 5 Pittsburgh 61, Boston College 48
NEW YORK - Pittsburgh scored the game's first seven points and never trailed against a Boston College team that had its lowest scoring game of the season. It also was the fewest points BC has ever scored in a Big East tournament game.
Led by Donatas Zavackas, who scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, fifth-ranked Pitt (25-4) dominated all night long. Julius Page scored 16 and Ontario Lett had 11.
It was the seventh time this season that Pitt's defense has held an opponent under 50 points and the third straight season the Panthers advanced to the tournament final.
Troy Bell scored 21 points for the Eagles (18-11).
No. 6 Oklahoma 74, Colorado 59
DALLAS - Quannas White and Hollis Price both scored 19 points and the sixth-ranked Sooners led throughout after the Buffaloes made the opening basket.
Two-time defending champion Oklahoma (21-6) has won seven straight Big 12 tournament games.
The Buffaloes (20-11) managed to cut the gap to 56-51. But Oklahoma responded with a clinching 9-0 run started by Johnnie Gilbert's alert play.
The shot clock was about to run out when Gilbert drove into traffic, made the basket and was fouled as the buzzer sounded. He missed the free throw, but that didn't matter.
After De'Angelo Alexander made two free throws, Kevin Bookout made a layup and White made a 3-pointer to make it 65-51 with 5:34 left.
Colorado had won four straight games, but that streak ended with its 15th loss in 16 games against Oklahoma.
No. 9 Wake Forest 69, Florida State 61
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Josh Howard struggled but still scored 17 points to lead ninth-ranked Wake Forest over Florida State in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.
He scored on an off-balance pump-fake in double coverage, then nailed a 12-foot jumper to give Wake Forest a 58-52 lead with 5:51 to play - the Deacons' first comfortable margin.
Wake Forest (24-4) will play North Carolina State in the semifinals.
Tim Pickett scored 17 points for Florida State (14-15).
Connecticut 80, No. 11 Syracuse 67
NEW YORK - Freshman Rashad Anderson had 21 points to lead Connecticut over No. 11 Syracuse in the seminfinals of the Big East Conference tournament, a game the defending champions had in command the entire second half.
The Huskies reached the tournament championship game for the fifth time in six seasons. They have won three titles in their current run and have five championships in all.
Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon, Connecticut's sophomore stars who led them to the semifinal win over Seton Hall, each had 12 points, while reserve forward Marcus White had nine points and 14 rebounds.
Conference rookie of the year Carmelo Anthony had 29 points and 15 rebounds for the Orangemen (24-5), who had won eight straight games and 11 of their last 12.
No. 12 Duke 83, Virginia 76
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Daniel Ewing scored a career-high 32 points as No. 12 Duke extended its record ACC tournament winning streak to 13 straight.
The victory by third-seeded Duke (22-6) produced the first all-North Carolina semifinals since 1963 and only the fourth in the 50-year history of the Atlantic Coast Conference postseason.
The Blue Devils will play North Carolina in the semifinals Saturday. Top-seeded Wake Forest will take on No. 4 seed N.C. State.
Dahntay Jones hit a pair of clutch 3-pointers in a span of 47 seconds down the stretch to seal it for the Blue Devils.
Virginia (15-15) lost its 13th straight postseason game, including an 0-8 record under coach Pete Gillen.
North Carolina 84, No. 14 Maryland 72
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Jawad Williams scored a career-high 25 points, Raymond Felton had 20 points and 10 assists and Melvin Scott added a career-high 19 points as North Carolina bounced No. 14 Maryland out of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
The win was yet another ACC tournament failure for second-seeded Maryland (19-9). The defending national champions have been to the tournament semifinals the past eight years, but haven't won a title since 1984.
North Carolina (17-14) jumped all over Maryland's mistakes and Scott was solid from long range, hitting three 3-pointers in a furious 20-7 run in the second half.
Missouri 60, No. 23 Oklahoma St. 58
DALLAS - Travon Bryant grabbed a loose ball and got off a short jumper just before time expired, giving Missouri a win over No. 23 Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament.
Teammate Jimmy McKinney drove to the basket to attempt a game-winning shot, but the ball got knocked away in traffic. It bounced off the shoulder of Oklahoma State's Tony Allen and through the arms of other Cowboys, straight to Bryant.
The Tigers (20-9) had been confident of making the NCAA tournament field for the fourth straight year under coach Quin Snyder, even before the Big 12 tournament. With two wins this week, Missouri now appears to be a lock no matter what happens over the weekend.
Oklahoma State (21-9) has lost eight of 12 since its 15-game winning streak, but the Cowboys still seem certain to make the NCAA tournament for the sixth straight time.
USC 79, No. 24 California 62
LOS ANGELES - Desmon Farmer scored 23 points and seventh-seeded Southern California led all the way in beating No. 24 California to advance to the Pac-10 Conference tournament championship.
The Trojans (13-16) will face Oregon in Saturday's championship game.
Jerry Dupree had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Trojans.
Joe Shipp led the Bears (21-8) with 19 points - all but three in the second half. Amit Tamir and Richard Midgley added 10 points apiece.
