NIT Games

Knight, Texas Tech reach semis

LUBBOCK, Texas - Andre Emmett scored 29 points to spark Texas Tech over Georgia Tech 80-72 and send Bob Knight to the NIT semifinals for the sixth time in his 37 years as a head coach.

Knight, in his second year at Texas Tech, took his Army team to the NIT three times and Indiana twice. His 1979 Indiana team won the tournament, beating Purdue 53-52.

Knight also won three NCAA titles in his 29 years at Indiana.

It is the first time the Red Raiders have been one of the final four teams in any postseason tournament. They reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament in 1996 and last played in the NIT in '95.

Robert Tomaszek scored 19 points and Kasib Powell added 15 for Texas Tech (21-12), which will play the winner of the UAB-St. John's game.

B.J. Elder scored 23 points for the Yellow Jackets (16-15), and Chris Bosh added 19.

Georgetown 79, North Carolina 74

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Drew Hall hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 58.2 seconds left and Mike Sweetney had 22 points and seven rebounds as Georgetown advanced to the NIT semifinals with a 79-74 victory over North Carolina on Wednesday night.

The Hoyas (18-14) earned a trip to New York the hard way - winning three straight road games - and will play the winner of Thursday night's Minnesota-Temple game. Georgetown won at Tennessee and Providence in the first two rounds.

Hall's 3-pointer broke a 70-70 tie and halted North Carolina's furious late rally. The Hoyas made six straight free throws over the final 16.6 seconds to seal it.

Gerald Riley scored 11 of his 22 points during a 22-4 run midway through the second half to break open a tight game and help deny the Tar Heels (19-16) a 20-win season one year after going a program-worst 8-20.
