Nets smother Golden State

But at a cost: Martin out with sprained knee

The Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Jason Kidd had 22 points, 13 assists, seven rebounds and five steals, and the New Jersey Nets held Golden State to two baskets in the final 6:30 in defeating the Warriors 109-97 Saturday night.

The win may have been costly, as power forward Kenyon Martin sprained his right knee on a drive to the basket in the third quarter. There was no immediate word on the severity of his injury.

Spurs 101, Jazz 81

SAN ANTONIO - Tim Duncan scored 30 points as San Antonio snapped Utah's six-game winning streak.

San Antonio, which has won 15 of 18, is now two games behind Midwest Division-leading Dallas with 10 games to play.

Celtics 110, Cavaliers 106

CLEVELAND - Paul Pierce scored 34 points and had a length-of-the-court assist late in the game to help Boston hold off Cleveland.

Pierce hit six 3-pointers as Boston broke a tie with Orlando for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

76ers 110, Hawks 89

ATLANTA - Allen Iverson had 38 points, nine assists and eight steals as Philadelphia coasted past Atlanta.

"I felt good about our chances in this game," Iverson said.

"They had beat us three times in a row. We didn't want them to sweep us."

Iverson finished 17-for-25 from the floor, missing his only 3-point attempt.

Kings 107, Bulls 92

CHICAGO - Peja Stojakovic scored 19 of his 27 points in the third quarter as Sacramento won its sixth in a row.

The victory lowered the Kings' magic number for winning the Pacific Division to three. Any combination of Sacramento victories and Portland losses totaling three will give Sacramento its second straight title.

Rockets 102, Nuggets 89

HOUSTON - Steve Francis had 18 points and tied his season high with 12 assists as Houston beat Denver. Yao Ming had 11 points and two rebounds.

BUCKS: Milwaukee has fined forward Tim Thomas an undisclosed amount for failing to re-enter a game at Denver on Wednesday night.

LATE FRIDAY: Kobe Bryant provided the entertainment at Michael Jordan's farewell party.

Playing probably his final game against Jordan, Bryant staged a sensational scoring show Friday, driving to the basket, hitting fallaway jumpers in the lane and nailing 3-pointers as he rang up 55 points, the NBA's high this season.

Bryant had 42 points by halftime, breaking a team record that had stood for more than 42 years.

Shaquille O'Neal was a bit awed.

"That was a performance I've never seen before, not even on PlayStation," O'Neal said.

The 55 points were one shy of Bryant's career best.

RAPTORS: Lenny Wilkens is one loss from tying the record of 1,106 losses set by Bill Fitch, a mark the Toronto coach could reach at home today against the New York Knicks.
