Senators clinch top seed
By The Associated Press
WASHINGTON - The Ottawa Senators clinched two titles Thursday night - one for themselves and one for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Senators grabbed the top seed in the Eastern Conference for the first time in the franchise's 10-year history as Peter Schaefer and Daniel Alfredsson scored two goals apiece in a 5-1 victory over the Washington Capitals.
The victory also gave the Senators a franchise-record 111 points, breaking the mark of 109 set in 2000-01. A victory over Toronto on Saturday will give Ottawa the Presidents' Trophy and home ice throughout the postseason.
Meanwhile, the Capitals loss gave Tampa Bay the Southeast Division title, the first division crown in the Lightning's 11-year history. Tampa Bay will have the No. 3 seed and Washington the No. 6 seed, and they will meet in the first round of the playoffs next week.
Devils 1, Bruins 1
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Boston goaltender Steve Shields made five of his 28 saves in overtime and the Boston Bruins skated to a tie with the New Jersey Devils in what might be a first-round matchup in the playoffs.
Joe Thornton scored in the second period for Boston, while Joe Nieuwendyk tallied for the Devils in the first period and lost an apparent winner in overtime because of a controversial penalty.
Nieuwendyk beat Shields at 49 seconds of the overtime with a shot in close, referee Mick McGeough immediately waved off the goal.
The play was set up when Jamie Langenbrunner put his arm around the waist of Bruins defenseman Nick Boynton as he skated around his own net. The little hold caused Boynton to lose the puck in front, and McGeough to call the penalty.
Maple Leafs 2, Wild 1
TORONTO - Aki Berg scored the go-ahead goal with 3:53 remaining in regulation as the Toronto Maple Leafs won their fourth straight.
Ed Belfour, who recorded his 400th career win Tuesday, made 20 saves for the Maple Leafs, who are unbeaten in their last five (5-0-1). Fans chanted 'Eddie!, Eddie! throughout the third period as Belfour made several spectacular saves.
Mikael Renberg returned after missing three games with a strained hamstring and scored Toronto's other goal.
Blackhawks 6, Blues 4
ST. LOUIS - Nathan Dempsey and Chris Simon each scored twice and rookie goalie Michael Leighton won his first career game as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the slumping St. Louis Blues.
The Blues trail the Avalanche by three points for fourth place in the Western Conference, and home-ice advantage for the first round. But St. Louis is 0-2-1 in its last three games, giving up two late goals in a tie with the Oilers on Monday and losing by four to the Red Wings on Saturday. The normally defensive-minded team has given up 17 goals in that span.
St. Louis wasn't helped enough in its home regular-season finale by the return of Keith Tkachuk, out nine games with a wrist injury. Tkachuk scored on a third-period power play. The Blues, who got two goals from Pavol Demitra, are 0-2-1 since Chris Pronger returned.
Red Wings 5, Islanders 2
DETROIT - Sergei Fedorov scored two goals and the Detroit Red Wings denied the New York Islanders a chance to clinch the final playoff spot in the East.
The Islanders, who have two games left, remain two points away from clinching the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Detroit is second in the Western Conference with 108 points, one behind the Dallas Stars. The Red Wings, who have won 21 of their last 25 games (21-3-0-1) have two games left, while the Stars have one.
Kris Draper, Mathieu Schneider and Luc Robitaille also scored for Detroit.
Alexei Yashin scored both goals for the Islanders.
Sharks 3, Oilers 3
EDMONTON, Alberta - Teemu Selanne scored his second goal of the game with 41 seconds left in regulation to give the San Jose Sharks a tie with the Edmonton Oilers.
Selanne slid a low shot to the short side past Edmonton goaltender Jussi Markkanen to send the game into overtime.
San Jose goaltender Vesa Toskala made several difficult saves, including a stop on Mike Comrie on a penalty shot midway through the second period. Comrie had been hauled down by Kyle McLaren on a breakaway.
Alyn McCauley also scored for the Sharks, who have won just once in their last 11 road games. Vincent Damphousse had two assists.
Edmonton is undefeated in seven games (4-0-3-0). The last time the Oilers lost was March 20, when Phoenix beat them 3-2 in overtime.
Fernando Pisani scored two goals, both on breakaways, and Ryan Smyth added his 27th of the season for Edmonton.
