Rooney to speak to Miami grads
Andy Rooney, best known for his "A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney" segment on CBS' 60 Minutes, will be sharing a few minutes with Miami University students at their May 3 graduation.
Rooney's unique reports have been a regular feature on the newsmagazine show for almost 25 years and won Emmy Awards in 1979, 1981 and 1982.
He has yet to decide what his few minutes with Miami grads will include.
"It's kind of neat to know the people graduating will remember you for the rest of your life," he said.
Rooney won a Peabody Award for his broadcast on American life in "Mr. Rooney Goes to Washington." He writes a column that appears in 200 newspapers across the country and has authored 12 books.
Rooney attended Colgate College until his junior year, when he was drafted into the Army.
Miami President James Garland made the decision to have Rooney speak.
"They are looking for people that have a national recognition and are good communicators" for commencement speakers, said Holly Wissing, a Miami spokeswoman.
New condos open in Over-the-Rhine
Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken cut the ribbon on a Main Street condominium project in Over-the-Rhine on Thursday, saying it "breathes new life" into Cincinnati's premier nightclub district.
The completed 18-unit condominium project, by Chris Frutkin of City Center Properties, offers owner-occupied units near downtown for less than $100,000, said real estate agent Christine Schoonover. The units will sell for $80,000 to $165,000.
Luken and Councilman John Cranley have appointed a committee to study the redevelopment of Main Street by closing off streets, allowing alcohol outdoors, and making street improvements.
"These condos will sell to young urban professionals who are upwardly mobile. If we're going to be serious about new urbanism, this is the niche market we have to attract," Cranley said.
Lakota girl charged with false report
WEST CHESTER TWP. - A 15-year-old female student at Lakota Freshman School was charged Friday with making false alarms after telling school officials and police this week a teen-age boy undid her belt buckle and top pants button in a restroom at the school, police said.
The girl, whose name is not being released because she is a juvenile, said the incident took place in a first-floor restroom in the school at 5050 Tylersville Road at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, said West Chester Police Sgt. Mike Quinn.
She had claimed she was entering a restroom stall when two boys surprised her inside the stall.
But after questioning the girl, detectives determined she made the story up, Sgt. Quinn said.
A juvenile court summons was given to the girl's parents Friday. She is expected in Butler County Juvenile Court April 10.
Evendale to pick new financial boss
EVENDALE - Village administrators hope to hire a new chief fiscal officer by next month.
Councilman Phil Schneider said the city has received about 30 applications for the position, which entails overseeing the city's general operating expenses of about $12 million a year.
Village Clerk Donna Lefevre has been handling those duties. But the clerk's job will become a part-time position once the chief financial officer is hired.
Bill Covell, the mayor's assistant, recently resigned. The village is deciding whether to replace him.
