LOUISVILLE - Resident undergraduates would have to pay $184 more a semester for tuition at the University of Louisville, under a proposal by the university's president.
U of L president Jim Ramsey will ask university trustees Thursday to increase tuition for resident undergraduates to $2,225 a semester, an increase that is expected to bring in $1.4 million.
Ramsey is proposing the additional increase because of a projected $6.4 million deficit in U of L's budget next year resulting from state budget cuts, investment losses, increases in health insurance costs and a proposed pay raise for U of L employees.
So far, five state universities and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System have approved double-digit percentage tuition increases for next year, including 23.4 percent by KCTCS and 16.4 percent at Northern Kentucky University.
Tuition for U of L nonresident undergraduates and most graduate and professional students also would go up 9 percent next year under Ramsey's proposal.
In May 2002, U of L trustees set 2003-04 tuition at $2,172 per semester, a 6.4 percent increase.
