South Florida hires McCullum

The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. - Robert McCullum will be the new basketball coach at South Florida after leading Western Michigan to a 20-11 record this season.

He will succeed Seth Greenberg, who left South Florida two weeks ago to coach Virginia Tech.

Western Michigan said McCullum was leaving the Mid-American Conference school for the Bulls.

South Florida scheduled a news conference Friday to introduce its new coach. Athletic director Lee Roy Selmon did not return telephone calls from The Associated Press on Thursday.

McCullum had a 44-45 record in three years at Western Michigan. He previously was an assistant at Illinois and Florida under Lon Kruger. He also worked as an assistant at Kansas State, Southern Illinois, South Alabama and Samford.

"The program has reached new levels of success both on the court and in the classroom under his direction and we wish him the best of luck in the future," Western Michigan athletic director Kathy Beauregard said.

The Broncos went 7-21 in their first season under McCullum and improved to 17-13 the following year.

"I'm most appreciative of the opportunity WMU provided me to reach my lifetime goal of becoming a head coach at the NCAA Division I level," McCullum said. "I'm extremely proud of the progress made over the last three years and of the direction the program is headed."
