Shelton, LeFors star in Louisville scrimmage
By The Associated Press
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Eric Shelton ran for 121 yards on 15 carries and Stefan LeFors completed 15-of-18 passes for 270 yards in Louisville's Red-White spring scrimmage on Friday night.
LeFors, who backed up Dave Ragone last season, threw three touchdown passes, two to Broderick Clark.
LeFors, a left-hander like Ragone, and Justin Rascati, a native of Gainesville, Fla., are competing for the starting quarterback spot heading into next season, said Louisville coach Bobby Petrino.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Rascati went 10-for-18 for 155 yards with a touchdown pass on Friday night.
Shelton, who transferred from Florida State in 2001, gained the early edge for the starting running back position. T.J. Patterson rushed 10 times for 56 yards and Lionel Gates rushed eight times for 24 yards. Shelton and Gates each had short touchdown runs.
On defense, Kerry Rhodes had the only interception, picking off LeFors. Defensive lineman Elvis Dumervil had the game's only sack.
Linebacker Jonathan Jackerson and defensive back Abe Brown each had a team-high 5.5 tackles.
The Red team, with LeFors and Shelton, scored 47 points and amassed 527 total yards.
