First up for Frankel: the Derby Trial
By Chris Duncan
The Associated Press
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Bobby Frankel has another race to win at Churchill Downs before next week's Kentucky Derby.
Midas Eyes, owned by Edmund Gann, is the 4-5 morning-line favorite in Saturday's $150,000-added Grade 3 Derby Trial.
Gann and Frankel will send Peace Rules to the gate in next week's Kentucky Derby. Frankel also trains Juddmonte Farms' Empire Maker, the expected Derby favorite.
But first comes the Trial, the featured race on opening day of Churchill's 52-day spring meet.
Midas Eyes, a son of Touch Gold, has won two of three career starts, including the 7-furlong Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park in March.
"His race down there - I didn't expect what I saw that day," Frankel said. "He ran unbelievable."
Frankel was pointing the colt toward the Lexington Stakes but opted for the Derby Trial after heavy rains in California postponed a scheduled work just days before the race at Keeneland.
Frankel said a victory Saturday could earn the colt a start in the Grade 1 Met Mile at Belmont Park on May 26.
Midas Eyes, who will be ridden by Jerry Bailey, drew a No. 3 post position in the scheduled six-horse field for the Trial.
The rest of the field, from the rail out, includes Desert Warrior, Miner Moss, Private Gold, Champali and Unbridled America.
Pat Day will ride Champali, the 2-1 second choice in the morning line. Day and Champali teamed to win last fall's Grade 3 Iroquois at Churchill Downs.
Private Gold, owned by Bob and Beverly Lewis and trained by Patrick Byrne, was the third choice at 7-2. Private Gold won the Rushaway Stakes at Turfway earlier this year.
