Couples wins his first in 5 years
The Enquirer and wire reports
HUMBLE, Texas - Fred Couples outdueled Mark Calcavecchia and held off challenges from Stuart Appleby and Hank Kuehne to win for the first time in five years, shooting a 5-under 67 Sunday to take the Houston Open by four strokes.
Couples, 43, led or shared the lead the first three days. He wouldn't let go Sunday, shutting the door after shrugging off stumbles midway through his round.
Three consecutive birdies starting at the 14th hole paved the way for his 15th victory overall and first since the 1998 Memorial Tournament. He finished with a flourish with a birdie on the 18th to finish at 21-under 267, then broke into tears.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Bruce Lietzke overcame the frustration of a number of missed birdie putts to win the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf in Savannah, Ga., for his first victory of the season. He made par on the last 10 holes in a round of 1-under-par 71, finishing at 10-under 206, one ahead of Dana Quigley (71) and David Eger (67).
LPGA TOUR: Se Ri Pak won the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship on the fourth hole of a playoff with Shani Waugh, the South Korean's second victory of the year and 20th of her career.
SPANISH OPEN: Kenneth Ferrie won his first European tour title, beating Peter Lawrie and Peter Hedblom on the second playoff hole. They finished regulation at 22-under-par 266.
