Ken Adams wasn't sure Wednesday if his mother would ever leave University Hospital's Intensive Care Unit after she was admitted with complications from heart disease and diabetes, and was listed in critical condition.
On Friday, Adams and his bride, Veronica, exchanged vows in her hospital room. His mother, Diane, sat upright and watched the ceremony as her own husband, Ron, held her hand.
Diane Adams, of Glendale, is now expected to recover and was moved into a private room just before the wedding.
"On Wednesday, in the midst of all the chaos, I sat with her for quite a bit and she told me she was going to see the wedding," Ken Adams said. "This was when she was still in grave danger. I told her for my heart to be in it completely, she would have to be there.
"She was in critical condition up until (Friday), and they just moved her into a regular room," he said. "We were elated. I don't remember ever seeing her smile so big."
Ken, 32, and Veronica Adams, 27, met 19 months ago in a bar while Ken was celebrating his birthday and Veronica was celebrating her sister's birthday. "We just kind of bumped into each other," Ken Adams said.
The two went on to celebrate their union Friday at Wetherington Golf and Country Club in West Chester Township. The couple will live in Fairfield Township, and say they're going to hold off on the honeymoon until Diane Adams is released from the hospital.
"We're going to stick close to home for a while," Ken Adams said. "But it's very encouraging because my mom's health has improved 200 percent since Wednesday."
