Personal Trainer

Exercise good at any age

By Dave Patania

Question: How can I get my husband to understand that he isn't still 19. He is 45, lifts weights, runs and is always pushing himself really hard.

Answer: My words to him would be to keep it up the good work. As long as he doesn't have a medical condition that exercise will aggravate, isn't hurting himself and enjoys what he is doing, he will be just fine.

Most people don't hit their cardiovascular peak until the age of 40. I train people 65-plus who work out at high levels of exercise intensity and duration. They aren't former pro athletes or exercise buffs, but grandmas and grandpas pumping it up.

When you hit 40 or older you should concentrate even more on exercise. When people start taking it easy is when they suffer injuries, ailments and diseases as a result of low physical activity. These problems are almost always diet/activity related and very much preventable.

It's been proved that the less activity you do, the less you get out of your body in terms of health and quality of life.

The human body is one tough, amazing machine, and if there is anything that is good for it, it is consistent exercise. That's what it was designed to do. Just make sure your husband gets regular medical checkups, does proper warm ups/cool downs and stretches and he will be fine.
