FRANKFORT - Democrat Bruce Lunsford has put up nearly $7 million from his personal fortune to finance his race for governor, a record for an election for state office.
Lunsford added $535,000 to his treasury Monday through Wednesday, according to reports filed at the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance. Gubernatorial campaigns are required to file daily reports if money is raised.
Lunsford, who made a fortune in the health-care industry, is not taking contributions. His total investment in the race is $6,996,120.
Lunsford's chief rival, Attorney General Ben Chandler, reported contributions Monday and Tuesday totaling $47,314. No report was available for Wednesday. Chandler's campaign topped $2.3 million two weeks ago.
A third contender in the Democratic primary, Speaker of the House Jody Richards, reported raising $14,292 Monday and $2,173 Tuesday.
Among Republicans, U.S. Rep. Ernie Fletcher of Lexington reported raising nearly $64,000 in four days this week.
Rebecca Jackson of Louisville reported raising $8,346 Monday through Wednesday. State Rep. Steve Nunn of Glasgow reported $5,640 Monday and Tuesday. No report for Wednesday was filed.
