Community choruses for kids



Cincinnati Boychoir

Randall Wolfe, director

Subgroups: Training Choir (beginning), Resident Choir (intermediate) and Tour Choir (advanced)

Ages: Entering third grade to voice change.

Meets: Training Choir meets 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday; times vary for other choirs (for instance, the top group rehearses twice a week).

Where: Boychoir Choral Arts Center, 1926 Mills Ave., Norwood

Tuition: $130 per semester; families are asked to raise another $75 in fund-raising per semester. Limited financial assistance is available.

Auditions: May 29, for boys with unchanged voices who will be entering grades 3 through 9, 6:15 p.m., Boychoir Choral Arts Center. 396-7664.

Next performance: 3 p.m. today, Holy Cross Church, Covington.

The choir will begin concertizing again in August. Next spring (March 27-April 5, 2004), the Boychoir will sing in the Crystal Cathedral in California, and tour Hawaii for concerts with the Honolulu Boychoir and the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra.

Cincinnati Children's Choir

Robyn Lana, director

Subgroups: Preparatory Choir; Jubilate Choir; Lyric Choir; Cincinnati Girl Choir; Bel Canto Choir (most advanced)

Ages: Grades 2 through 12

Meets: Prep, Jubilate and Lyric choirs are on Tuesdays; Girl Choir Thursday; Bel Canto Tuesday and Thursday. Times vary.

Where: University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music

Tuition: $245-$350, depending on the choir, per year. Scholarships are available.

Auditions: By appointment in May, June and September. 556-0338 or 556-2595; www.ccm.uc.edu/prep.

Upcoming performances: The choir will host the Cincinnati Children's Choir Festival, July 28-Aug. 2, which will close with a Festival Concert. Information or registration: 556-0338.

May Festival Youth Chorus

James Bagwell, director

Subgroups: None. The chorus has about 70 members.

Ages: Ninth through 12th grade

Meets: 2:30-5 p.m. Sundays, September through May

Where: Knox Presbyterian Church, Hyde Park

Tuition: No cost

Auditions (for the 2003-04 season): July 7, 8, 14, 15 and Sept. 6, 7, 13. 744-3229.

Upcoming performances: Besides the May Festival, members will perform with the May Festival Summer Chorus at Riverbend Pops concerts this summer.

Northern Kentucky Children's Ensemble

Brenda Fauber, director

Subgroups: Prep Choir and Concert Choir

Ages: Second through ninth grades; many stay through grade 12.

Meets: 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

Where: Fine Arts Center, Northern Kentucky University

Cost: $125 per semester; scholarships are available.

Auditions: The Concert Choir has a waiting list for the 2003-04 year; the Prep Choir still has openings. Auditions: (859) 572-7737.

Upcoming performances: The choir will begin again in September. It has twice appeared at Carnegie Hall for the National Children's Choir Festival. Next spring, it will take a tour to Washington.
