Mason man dies, 9 injured in 3-car crash

MONROE - A 25-year-old Mason man was killed and nine others were injured in a three-car accident early Sunday morning on northbound Interstate 75 near here.

Chad Geiger, a passenger in one of the cars, was pronounced dead at the scene, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers in Hamilton said.

Timothy Straight of Liberty Township, the 25-year-old driver of the car Geiger was riding in, was injured, along with the drivers of two other cars and their six passengers. The injuries were not life-threatening and all were transported to Middletown Regional Hospital for treatment, troopers reported.

The accident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday, near the Ohio 63 exit, when the car driven by Straight, traveling at a high speed, slid off the road and struck a cable barrier, troopers aid. The car rolled over and slid back onto the highway, where it was struck by a car driven by 22-year-old Terrance Ramsey of Middletown. Ramsey's car went on to strike a vehicle driven by 25-year-old Yvonne Bromund of Flat Rock, Mich., which had pulled off on to the berm to avoid the Straight vehicle.

Walk raises $450,000 to fight breast cancer

About 500 people clad in pink - the color for breast cancer awareness - ended their two-day march Sunday in Cincinnati with a $450,000 gift to Jewish Hospital.

Each walker raised at least $1,750 to participate in the event, the third stop of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer on its eight-city tour.

The organization's gift to the Jewish Hospital will be used to replace a mobile mammography vehicle, support new staffing and provide free breast cancer screenings to women who are unable to afford care.

Walkers started their march Saturday on the riverfront and ended Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium.

Medical center wins environmental awards

St. Elizabeth Medical Center has won two national recognition awards for earth-friendly initiatives, including its programs to minimize waste and prevent pollution.

The medical center is the only health-care institution in the Tristate, and the first hospital in Kentucky, to be so honored. The awards are given by Hospitals for a Healthy Environment, an initiative designed to encourage hospitals to take a leadership role in reducing their environmental impact while saving money and reducing liabilities. More than 1,400 health care facilities have joined the program.

The 140-year-old St. Elizabeth Medical Center is one of the largest acute-care hospitals in Kentucky, with hospitals in Edgewood, Covington and Williamstown.

Police seek identity of body found in river

Police were still trying Sunday to learn the identity of a decomposed body found Saturday night near the Ohio River shore, just west of downtown.

A tugboat pilot spotted the body about 8:35 p.m. Saturday. Police boarded the tug at the Public Landing and were taken to a spot near the western end of Mehring Way, near a Metropolitan Sewer District dam and a railroad bridge. The body - which was not identified by police as male or female - was recovered and taken to the Hamilton County morgue for examination.

As of Sunday afternoon, officials had not identified the body or determined a cause of death. Cincinnati Police homicide detectives are investigating.

Fire department worker held in beating

A Colerain Township Fire Department employee was held at the Hamilton County Justice Center Sunday for allegedly beating a man early Saturday while yelling homosexual slurs.

Stephen Cloud, 22, of Fairfield, was charged with assault in the 2:25 a.m. incident in a parking lot near the Hamilton County Courthouse. He is scheduled to appear in court today.

Cloud was seen by several witnesses hitting the victim in the head and kicking him in the side while yelling slurs, according to his arrest report. The assault caused injuries, the report states, but the victim's condition was not available late Sunday.

Reached late Sunday, Colerain Township Captain Randy Ellert declined to confirm Cloud's employment or to discuss his job status and the alleged incident.
