Market Scan

Strawberries are members of the rose family and have been cultivated and eaten for centuries in America and Europe. Fresh strawberries are available year-round but are best in the spring, from April until June. Generally, the smaller the berry and the deeper the red color, the more flavorful the strawberry. Choose brightly colored, plump berries that have their green caps attached. Do not wash strawberries until just before using, and store, preferably in a single layer on a paper towel, in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Sip It

Kwak, $3.50: Malty to a fault, with a slight caramel note and the barest suspicion of a spicy Belgian origin. Dense tan head on a copper-colored beer. Magnificent with the final course to top off a great meal. For a special treat, try it on tap in its special "stirrup glass." Among stores carrying draft version is Mariemont's Dilly Deli.
