Some Good News

Computers will get a second user

Some 360 businesses have registered to participate in the Computer Recycling Collection Event, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., May 29-31 at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds, Carthage.

"Unfortunately, we cannot register any more businesses to participate this year, but we urge them to call us to get on the list for next year,'' said Christy Kellner, business specialist for the Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District, which sponsors the event.

Businesses can get on next year's list by calling 946-7732.

Kellner said the district expects to fill 40 semi-trucks with computers.

She said the computers are sent to the Ohio Prison Industries, near Cleveland, where some are broken down and mined for parts and some are refurbished and sent to nonprofits and schools.

The recycling event has been expanded to include Butler and Clermont counties and Northern Kentucky.

"We greatly exceeded our expectation this year,'' Kellner said. "We only had 81 businesses participating last year.''

Twenty-six seniors from Hughes Center saved a combined total of $12,500 this school year through SmartMoney Community Services, an incentive program providing students with a 2-to-1 savings match.

Fifth Third Bank provided $25,000 in matching funds for the students.

Students may use the fund for higher education, purchase of a personal computer or the startup of a small business.

The program teaches students the importance of effectively aligning income with expenses, establishing a monthly budget and long-term savings plan, and responsibly handling credit.

For more information about SmartMoney, call 475-7002, 241-7266 or 579-4126.
