Leonard bogeys chance for 59 at Colonial

Perry runs away with championship

Enquirer news services

Justin Leonard missed a chance to become the fourth golfer to shoot 59 in a PGA Tour event when he bogeyed the final hole at the Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas.

Leonard finished with a 9-under-par 61 to match the round shot Saturday by Kenny Perry, who closed with a 68 and won by six strokes at 261. Leonard's score also tied Perry and three others for the low round in a PGA Tour event this year.

Leonard, the 1997 British Open champion, was 10 under approaching the 18th green. But he left his 9-iron approach from 144 yards short of the green, chipped about 15 feet past the pin and left his par attempt high of the closing hole at Colonial Country Club.

"It was definitely the wrong club," Leonard said of his approach. "I tried to hit it in close, and it just didn't work out."

Leonard, who finished with a 13-under 267, was trying to become the first male golfer since David Duval in 1999 to shoot 59. Al Geiberger was the first to shoot a 59, in 1977, joined in 1991 by Chip Beck.

The only woman to shoot a 59 in competition, Annika Sorenstam, played the Colonial this week as the first woman in 58 years to compete in a U.S. men's tour event. Sorenstam failed to make the cut for the last two rounds, shooting 5 over par and finishing tied for 96th.

"I'll probably be remembered as the guy who won Annika's event, but that's OK with me," Perry said.

LPGA TOUR: Juli Inkster made her first Corning (N.Y.) Classic victory one for the record books.

Inkster shot a 10-under-par 62 - tying the lowest final-round score by a winner in the history of the LPGA Tour - to beat Lorie Kane by four strokes despite a closing 67 by the Canadian star.

It was also Inkster's first win since she beat Sorenstam for the 2002 U.S. Women's Open title.

Inkster's 24-under-par 264 total shattered the tournament record of 268 set in 1998 by Tammie Green. It was her 29th career win, 17th come-from-behind triumph and lowest round of her Hall of Fame career.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Morris Hatalsky made a 4-foot par putt on the last hole - his eighth straight par - to win his second over-50 title, beating Allen Doyle by a stroke at the Columbus (Ga.) Southern Open.

Hatalsky closed with a 3-under 67 at Green Island Country Club and finished at 12-under 198. Doyle was second at 199 after a 67.

"It was basically coaxing in 20-, 25-footers for two putts," Hatalsky said. "I saw Allen didn't make birdie, so there was no pressure on me to make birdie. I was just playing to the middle of the green."

Hatalsky was the 2002 Champions Tour rookie of the year.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Ignacio Garrido of Spain won the Volvo PGA Championship, defeating Trevor Immelman of South Africa on the first hole of a playoff in Virginia Water, England. Garrido closed with a 7-under-par 65 to catch Immelman (68). Each had a four-round total of 18-under 270.
