Students win
jazz solo heats
Deer Park High School Jazz Band students Andy Wilfong (trumpet), Alan Keller (trombone) and Nick Giese (electric guitar/bass) each were recipients of the Outstanding Jazz Musicianship Award for solos at the Annual Southwestern Ohio High School Jazz Festival.
Giese received the top award of a full-tuition scholarship to the nationally acclaimed Aebersold Jazz Clinic held each summer at the University of Louisville.
Assists the blind
Monica Grote has received a master's degree in blind rehabilitation teaching from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. She is now serving an internship at the Cincinnati Association for the Blind.
The Lakota High School graduate is the daughter of Sharon and Ray Grote of Liberty Township.
Earns Eagle Scout
A.J. Harpring, of Troop 603, Corpus Christi Church, has earned the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America: the Eagle Scout award.
His community service project involved the refurbishing of the Development House next to Roger Bacon High School.
He and his team cleaned and resealed, made wood steps and railings, and put a new roof on the back porch, put up lattice work, built picnic tables, stripped and repainted the front porch and landscaped.
Adam, a senior at Roger Bacon, is the son of Debbie and Richard Harpring of Springfield Township.
Inducted in society
Daphanie Joyner, a senior English major at Wilmington College, Ohio, has been inducted into Phi Delta Kappa education honorary.
She is a Withrow High School graduate.
In honors group
Stephen Renzi, of William Mason High School, has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars that inducts only the most outstanding high school students and honors them for superior academic achievement.
He is the son of Deborah and Anthony Renzi of Mason.
