Metallica unleashes its 'Anger' early

The lightning-fast songs on Metallica's new album, St. Anger, are carrying over to the CD itself, which is arriving in stores Thursday, five days ahead of schedule.

The hotly anticipated June 10 release date was moved up in an attempt to beat the bootleggers (and no doubt garner a bit more publicity for the disc). It's a technique recently used successfully by rappers Eminem and 50 Cent.

St. Anger, Metallica's first new studio album in six years, precedes the San Francisco-based band's "Summer Sanitarium" Tour, which plays Ohio Stadium in Columbus on July 19. It's the group's first album since bassist Jason Newsted left in 2001 (producer Bob Rock plays on St. Anger).

In the sort of trade news more common in baseball than rock, bassist Robert Trujillo has left Ozzy Osbourne's band to join Metallica, while Newsted has joined Osbourne's band.
