Bus tour, programs examine Ohio lore

Randy McNutt

BATAVIA - Clermont County will celebrate Ohio's bicentennial with summer programs, including a bus tour of Civil War sites.

The goal is to share local events and show the county's significance in Ohio's past.

Programs include:

From Here: A Century of Voices from Ohio is an offshoot of the statewide Wallpaper Project, which combines community history with theater.

Creators have tapped the collections of the Milford and Loveland historical societies to create an oral history program that will be held Aug. 15-17 at Milford High School.

It is sponsored by the Greater Milford Area Historical Society. Additional information: 248-0324.

• The first Morgan's Raid Site Tour of Clermont County will be held Aug. 23. Historian Richard Crawford will lead a bus trip to 20 Clermont County sites visited by Confederate Gen. John Hunt Morgan's cavalry as they roared through Ohio in July 1863.

Information: 724-6222.

Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commemoration, sponsored by the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery of New Richmond. Re-enactors of the early 1800s will appear at the New Richmond Heritage Festival Sept. 27-30.

Information: 515-2153.

The Clermont County History Exhibit will run through July 2 in the exhibit room in the Snyder Building at Clermont College.

HAMILTON - The historic Key Building celebrates its centennial this month in the Butler County seat.

Construction began in 1903 and was completed in 1906.

The building was named the Rentschler Building in honor of its builder, George Adam Rentschler, a German immigrant and pioneering Hamilton industry leader.

Owner Al Koncius will add a bronze plaque to the entrance on the Second Street side of the building: "The Rentschler Building - A Hamilton Landmark since 1903."

Rentschler's Citizens Bank used the building as its headquarters for decades.

The bank is now Key Bank, which still operates in the building.
