Hurricanes undecided about ACC
The Associated Press
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Miami will consider counterproposals from the Big East before deciding whether to accept an offer to join the Atlantic Coast Conference.
After meeting for more than an hour with the university's 19-member executive committee of its board of trustees Thursday, school president Donna Shalala said an expected vote was not taken.
"The Big East has informally sent a proposal, or at least a list of proposals, to us and we feel a responsibility to review them," said Shalala, who said she was not ruling out remaining in the Big East. She said a decision will be announced Monday.
Miami and Virginia Tech were invited this week to create an 11-member ACC. Virginia Tech officials indicated they will accept.
Also Thursday, Superior Court judge Samuel J. Sferrazza said he would rule by today on a request to speed up a lawsuit against Miami filed by four Big East schools. Connecticut, Rutgers, West Virginia and Pittsburgh contend they have spent millions on their football programs based on presumed loyalty from other conference members.
