As July 4 draws near, we salute the men who fought for the republic on the carrier USS Hornet in World War II.
Former crew members live in Greater Cincinnati and attend monthly meetings there and in Oxford. On Sept. 10-14, they will attend the 55th Hornet reunion at the Admiral Semmes Hotel in Mobile, Ala.
Members include Stanton "Bud" Newkirk, a retired Champion pubic relations executive from Hamilton, and Ken Glass, a former Miami University associate dean who lives in Oxford. He is a retired captain and a member of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.
Glass, who was recently appointed reunion president, served as a pilot with Torpedo Squadron Two.
"In March 1944, after the shortest shakedown cruise in Navy history (two weeks), the CV-12 engaged the enemy in the Pacific," Newkirk said. "Her exploits during the following 18 months were spectacular and astonishing, and she never tied up at pier."
Today, Hornet CVS-12 is berthed in Gen. James Doolittle's hometown, Alameda, Calif., as a National Historic Landmark and museum.
