Colts clear cap room with new James deal

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indianapolis Colts restructured Edgerrin James' contract, saving the team about $1.6 million against this year's salary cap.
The restructured deal reduces James' salary from $1.275 million to $530,000, but gives him a $2.48 million signing bonus. He would have received about $1.7 million in bonuses and incentives in the previous deal.
James, a two-time NFL rushing champion, has two years remaining on the six-year deal he signed in 1999. He rushed for 989 yards last season after coming off knee surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
TEXANS: Tony Boselli gave up on his comeback from shoulder injuries and retired without ever playing a down for Houston, which made the one-time All-Pro offensive tackle its top pick in the 2002 expansion draft.
"I'm disappointed that I will not be able to play for the Texans and do what I was brought here to do," Boselli said in a statement.
BEARS: Free agent safety Mike Brown signed a six-year contract to stay with Chicago. Financial details were not disclosed.
In three seasons, Brown has scored four defensive touchdowns to tie a team record. Last season, he had three interceptions, giving him nine for his career.
CHIEFS: Kansas City signed first-round draft pick Larry Johnson to a seven-year deal. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound running back from Penn State was the 27th overall selection and is just the second first-round pick from this year's NFL draft to sign; the other is first overall pick Carson Palmer of Cincinnati.

OHIO STATE: Offensive lineman Ivan Douglas will sit out this season because of a blood clot near his chest. Douglas' likely replacement at left tackle would be sophomore Rob Sims.
The 6-8, 300-pound senior missed the 2001 season because of a clot in his lung. He started 12 of 13 regular-season games in 2002, but was sidelined during the Fiesta Bowl by a sprained ankle.

WASHINGTON: The men's program was docked one scholarship and placed on probation for two years by the NCAA because of recruiting violations by an assistant coach.
The Huskies will have 12 scholarships available this season. They also were placed under recruiting limitations and were ordered to develop a comprehensive educational program on NCAA legislation because of the violations by assistant Cameron Dollar regarding phone calls, recruiting contacts and evaluations, and attendance at a non-certified camp.
BAYLOR: Sheriff's deputies at Cambridge, Md., questioned former Bears player Carlton Dotson, whom Texas authorities have called a "person of interest" in the disappearance of Baylor center Patrick Dennehy. Dorchester County Sheriff James W. Phillips Jr. said Dotson met with a detective and an FBI agent "of his own free will" and "there will be no charges based on what happened tonight."
According to a search warrant affidavit, an unidentified informant notified Delaware police that Dotson told his cousin he shot Dennehy in the head when the two argued while firing guns in the Waco, Texas, area.
Soccer
U.S. WOMEN: The defending champion United States team will play Sweden Sept. 21 in its first game of the Women's World Cup, and will play its third game against North Korea the following week in Columbus on a date to be determined. The Americans' second game will be against Nigeria on Sept. 25 in Philadelphia.
The top-seeded Americans were placed in Group A with Sweden, Nigeria and North Korea. The 16-nation tournament begins Sept. 20.
