The Insatiable Shopper
Scouting the marketplace with Joy Kraft
Marketable art: Art in the Market, the public art project that has added color and creativity to Over-the-Rhine's Findlay Market with benches, murals and snappy signage, is creating art that shoppers can take home with them. Saturdays, the teen artists are at the market creating note cards using their artwork and Cincinnati scenes for $1 each, as well as sculpture using metal scraps and copper. The program, administered by the University of Cincinnati, Impact Over-the-Rhine and The Citizens Committee on Youth, puts teens to work creating community art.
Bugged off clothes: There's an alternative to staying indoors if you're allergic to insect repellant. Coghlan's, the camping people, make fine no-see-um mesh jackets and pants that are lightweight, cool polyester, even if they're just a little goofy-looking. But when others are slapping and scratching, you'll be sleeping pretty. $9.97 and up at Dick's Sporting Goods stores and Sun and Ski Sports, Kenwood.
Double-duty cooler: Gear that does double-duty out in the wilderness - or at the beach - is prized by seasoned campers. This Outdoor Life cooler, big enough to keep 18 beverage cans frosty, doubles as a radio. Yellow or blue. $39.99 (from $60) at Lazarus. Target shoppers will find a Coleman combo TV/lantern with an AM-FM radio for $49.
