Stadler wins B.C. Open
By The Associated Press
ENDICOTT, N.Y. - Craig Stadler shot a 9-under-par 63 to come from eight shots behind and win the B.C. Open by one stroke over Alex Cejka and Steve Lowery.
It was the 13th victory on the PGA Tour for the 50-year-old Stadler and his second win in two weeks. He captured the Senior Players Championship last week, and with his victory here matched a feat accomplished only by Ray Floyd - winning on both the Senior Tour and PGA Tour in the same year. Floyd did it in 1992 when he won at Doral (at age 49) and the GTE North Classic.
Stadler finished at 21-under-par 267. His scintillating performance spoiled what had been a marvelous weekend for Lowery, who entered the day with a five-shot lead over Cejka and John E. Morgan of England.
But after carding a pair of 64s and a 68, Lowery had an even-par 72 to finish at 268. Rod Pampling had a closing 66 and was alone at 269.
LPGA Big Apple Classic
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Hee-Won Han matched par in a final-round 71 that gave her a two-shot victory over Meg Mallon in the LPGA Big Apple Classic, making her the tour's third first-time winner in the last four weeks.
Last year, Han missed a 6-foot birdie putt on the final hole of regulation that would have given her her first win, then she lost to Gloria Park on the first playoff hole at Wykagyl Country Club.
This year there was nothing but smiles for the 2001 LPGA Tour rookie of the year as she made a 4-foot birdie putt on the closing par-5 to finish at 11-under 273.
Mallon, tied for the lead after three rounds, shot a 2-over 73 for second place.
Cindy Figg-Currier, who started the day in third, five strokes behind the leaders, had a 72 and finished tied for third at 5-under 279 with Grace Park, who had a 68.
Nationwide
GLEN ALLEN, Va. - Mark Hensby of Australia birdied the first hole of a playoff with Zach Johnson to win the Nationwide Tour's Henrico County Open.
Hensby shot a career-best 9-under 63 in the final round to finish tied with Johnson at 20-under 268. Johnson made it into the playoff with a fantastic five-hole run: an eagle, three birdies and a par.
