Wizards, Arenas agree on $60M deal
Enquirer wire services
Gilbert Arenas, the top point guard available in free agency, has signed an offer sheet to play for the Washington Wizards.
Arenas fills a major void for the Wizards, whose only true point guard on the roster is second-round-draft pick Steve Blake. Larry Hughes and Juan Dixon played the position last year, but both are natural shooting guards.
Arenas' six-year deal is worth more than $60 million, his father told the San Francisco Chronicle. The Golden State Warriors will have 15 days to match the offer, but aren't expected to do so because they have little room to maneuver for more signings under the salary cap.
Arenas helped lead the Warriors to respectability last year and was selected as the NBA's Most Improved Player after averaging 18.3 points, 6.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds.
BLOCKBUSTER RUMOR: The Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Atlanta Hawks are working on a blockbuster deal, according to ESPN.com. Philadelphia would acquire forward Glenn Robinson from Atlanta, while Minnesota will obtain swingman Latrell Sprewell from New York. Forward Keith Van Horn will depart the 76ers for the Knicks, while the Hawks would receive guard Terrell Brandon from the Timberwolves.
WARRIORS: Free-agent point guard Speedy Claxton, who helped the San Antonio Spurs win the NBA title, will sign a three-year, $9.9 million contract with the Golden State Warriors, a person familiar with the contract said.
CAVALIERS: Forward Ira Newble, a Miami University product, signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers, providing much-needed depth to the team's frontcourt.
Newble, who spent the past two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, became the Cavaliers' second free-agent signing this offseason. Point guard Kevin Ollie signed last week to help mentor top draft pick LeBron James.
The two players split the team's $4.9 million salary cap exception for veterans, team spokesman Tad Carper said.
Newble, picked in the 1999 International Basketball League draft out of MU, also played in 27 games for San Antonio in the 2000-01 season.
MAGIC: Andrew DeClercq re-signed with Orlando.
The team did not announce details of the contract, but the Orlando Sentinel reported it was worth $5 million over two seasons.
DeClercq played forward and center, averaging 4.7 points and 4.4 rebounds last season in 77 games with 21 starts.
