Roddick repels challenge in Indy

The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS - Top-seeded Andy Roddick won four of the last five points in the third-set tiebreaker Tuesday night and advanced to the third round of the RCA Championships with a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (4) victory over Cyril Saulnier.

Roddick, ranked sixth in the world, had 17 aces, but the unseeded Saulnier, ranked No. 101, hung in by saving 10 of 12 break points.

"His strategy was just to poke it back," Roddick said of Saulnier's service returns. "It was frustrating. I felt I was getting the better end of him, and I'd be down a set and a break.

"It's almost like the better shots I'd hit, the better shots he'd come up with," Roddick said. "He was serving well. He was hitting his spots. I think he played a pretty smart match."

In other matches involving seeded players, No. 3 Sjeng Schalken needed just 69 minutes to beat unseeded Ivan Miranda 6-3, 6-1, fifth-seeded Jan-Michael Gambill took nine minutes less to eliminated Thomas Enqvist by the same score and sixth-seeded Mardy Fish of the United States defeated Chris Guccione of Australia, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4.

Schalken said he had to work to keep his shots down after playing with the heavier balls used at Wimbledon.

"The balls are way lighter here, especially with my flat shot," he said. "The balls just keep on flying here. They are quicker a little bit. It helps my serve because I'm not a big server. It suits my game."

Gambill credited a short vacation with reviving his game after an unproductive early summer in European tournaments.

"I felt my batteries were re-energized. This was the best I've served all year," he said after recording 13 aces, landing 71 percent of his first serves and winning 31 of 36 first-serve points. "I had one shot backing him down the line. That may be the best shot I've ever hit."

Enqvist, the 1995 RCA champion and a six-time quarterfinalist, was unseeded.

"Thomas Enqvist should be a seeded man," Gambill said. "He still wants to win. I saw some fire today. He's going to be winning again."

In other second-round matches, unseeded Wesley Moodie outlasted No. 12 Brian Vahaly 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (1) and Nicolas Kiefer swept Prakash Amritraj 6-3, 6-1.
