DAYTON - Fifteen bicyclists completed the first 105 miles Saturday of an 865-mile trek to Kitty Hawk, N.C., marking the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first flight.

Anita Patten, who handled much of the trip's logistics, said the first day of the 15-day, four-state adventure was hot but uneventful, with a couple of flat tires and one major climb at the 85-mile mark.

"It gave us a little bit of a taste of what's to come," said Patten, president of the Dayton Cycling Club.

Most of the riders are members of the club.

The group planned to spend the night Saturday in Piketon in southern Ohio and begin following the Scioto River for about 25 miles today before pedaling through the Appalachian foothills toward Grayson, Ky. The group's goal today was about 82 miles.

"Most of us have never ridden through the mountains, so we really don't know what to expect," Patten said.

The group departed from a site near Beavercreek about 8 a.m. Saturday. Patten said some members arrived in Piketon by 3:30 p.m., with the rest of them reaching the first day's destination about three hours later.

The bicyclists plan to visit the Wright Brothers National Monument when they reach Kitty Hawk, where Dayton natives Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first powered flight on Dec. 17, 1903.
