On Aug. 6, 1890, Gilmore, native Cy Young began his major league pitching career with the Cleveland Spiders, beating the Chicago White Sox 8-1.
Born Denton True Young in 1867, he holds the record for most wins by a Major League Baseball pitcher. During his 22-year career, Young won 511 games - averaging more than 23 wins a season.
A bystander once said Young could throw a ball with the force of a cyclone - thus his nickname, which was eventually shortened to "Cy." He played for the Spiders until 1899. In 1905, while with the Boston Red Sox, he pitched the first perfect game in American League history. Young joined the Cleveland Naps in 1909 and retired after the 1911 season.
He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937. Young died in 1955 in Newcomerstown. In 1956, the Cy Young Award - presented annually to the best pitcher in each league - was instituted.
