Federer works his way out of first-round trouble
The Associated Press
MONTREAL - Wimbledon champion Roger Federer won the last four games to cap an impressive comeback against Gaston Gaudio on Tuesday in the first round of the Canada Masters.
The third-seeded Federer was trailing 5-3 in the last set. Moments earlier, he was down three break points serving at 2-4, 0-40. He had to save another break point serving at 1-3.
"I was in a lot of trouble, and I didn't think I was going to pull this one out," Federer said of the 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory. "He was playing really well, and I had to battle really hard today."
Federer was making his first tour appearance since a three-week layoff after reaching the final at Gstaad after winning Wimbledon.
"I'm happy to pass the first round, look ahead a little bit and breathe a little bit," said Federer, who will meet Greg Rusedski in the second round.
French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero had little trouble getting by qualifier Cyril Saulnier 6-4, 6-4 and next will meet Morocco's Younes El Aynaoui.
WOMEN: Top-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland was eliminated in the first round, losing to Silvija Talaja of Croatia 7-6 (4), 6-2 at the Nordea Nordic Light Open.
The $140,000 tournament in Finland is in its second year. It moves to Stockholm, Sweden, next year as a part of a rotation in Scandinavia.
