Food shoppers are checking out more than their groceries on trips to the supermarket, a new poll shows.
The "Food in America" poll by Food & Wine magazine and America Online indicates the supermarket check-out line is the most popular choice for a place to meet a mate.
Thirty-four percent of respondents picked the supermarket over adult-education cooking classes (31 percent), farmer's markets (23 percent) and bookstores' cookbook departments (12 percent).
The unscientific poll's other findings include:
Whipped cream is the sexiest food.
Chocolate mousse is better than sex.
A burger and fries is the quintessential American food.
Merlot is the most favored red wine.
Skinless chicken breast is the food of choice for healthful cooking.
Chef Emeril Lagasse is the sexiest food celebrity on television.
Ozzy Osbourne's refrigerator inspires the most curiosity.
The poll, which surveyed nearly one million AOL members, is featured in the August issue of Food & Wine magazine. For more, go to www.foodandwine.com/fia.
