Tristate fans mix eclectic soundtracks

When we asked readers to submit their favorite summer mixes, we figured a Beach Boys song would pop up here and there. We weren't prepared for the diverse and eclectic tastes that put new stuff next to golden oldies, and classics following one-hit wonders.

But that's the beauty of making your own mix - you can put what you like on the CD. Read on for favorites from fellow readers.

My nomination is Shaggy Hot Shot Ultramix. I listen to this CD faithfully everytime I go to Brookville beach. It screams summer and mentally takes me to the Caribbean as I listen to it with my feet in the sand, looking out at the water. This remix CD is much better than the original release and will have you bouncing along to the beat, guaranteed.

Michael J. Matre, Fairfield

It was February. Everything was dark and locked in snow and ice. Fairfield was shut down. No movies. No theater. No bars. No restaurants. No nothin'.

I was sittin' by my fire readin' Tempo and whinin', "Hurry up, Summer!" After I'd felt sorry enough for myself, I slid into the den and slipped a Jimmy Buffett CD into the music system.

The first track is my all-time favorite "Margaritaville." Its bouncy island melody and words about a guy hung over from perpetual partying still looking for his lost shaker of salt throw me into a summer mindset.

Suddenly, it's July, maybe August, and there are burgers, metts, and brats sizzling on a charcoal grill. There is ketchup and mustard, and relish, potato salad, baked beans, corn on the cob, beer, soda, and homemade ice cream.

There is a hot sun, a tempting breeze, a blue sky filled with billowy white clouds that intrigue me with images that drift away in seconds.......and the Buffett Man cranked up on a CD player plugged into chubby speakers.

This is my summer mix. Who's got the margaritas?

All I have to do is turn on my CD, settle down in my air conditioned family room with a cup of reheated coffee from the microwave, close my eyes and listen to the likes of Sinatra, Glenn Miller or Tommy Dorsey.

Almost instantly I am aboard the Island Queen, heading for Coney Island. The homemade fried chicken, potato salad and apple pie tucked away beside us in a big picnic basket, waiting to be consumed after an afternoon of swimming in Coney's Sunlite Pool, then dancing the night away under the stars at moonlight gardens to the music of the big bands.

Never mind the sweltering heat, the flies, the risk of eating food left unrefridgerated for hours, the polio scare and the painful sunburn the following day. After all, that was B.C. - before computers.
