Roddick cruises to title at Montreal
The Associated Press
MONTREAL - Andy Roddick beat 2002 Wimbledon runner-up David Nalbandian 6-1, 6-3 Sunday to win the Masters Canada for his fourth title of the year.
It's the first Tennis Masters Series championship for Roddick, who came up short in last year's final in Canada.
Roddick lost his serve just once and needed less than an hour of playing time to defeat the Argentine at the hard-court tuneup for the U.S. Open.
"It's my biggest title so far," Roddick said of the win. "Hopefully, it will be a good stepping stone to the Open."
The start of the match was delayed 1 hour, 35 minutes by rain, and another shower stopped action for nearly an hour with Roddick ahead 4-2 in the second set.
"Andy didn't have to do many things today," Nalbandian said. "I couldn't play my game."
The victory pushes Roddick to No. 4 in the rankings. He's 24-2 since hiring Brad Gilbert as coach after a first-round loss at the French Open.
JPMORGAN CHASE OPEN: Kim Clijsters became the new No. 1 in women's tennis Sunday, outlasting Lindsay Davenport 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to win the JPMorgan Chase Open for her tour-high sixth title of the year.
"This is a day I'll never forget," she said, smiling.
Clijsters takes over the top spot from the injured Serena Williams, who will trail by less than 45 points when the WTA Tour rankings come out today.
Clijsters, who moves up from No. 2, is the first Belgian and the 12th woman to be No. 1 since the rankings began in 1975.
