Today's money tip
Donating stocks to charity that you've held longer than one year and that have risen in value provides a two-pronged tax savings for you: First, you get to deduct the full value of the shares at the time you donate them. Plus, you don't incur the capital-gains taxes that would likely be owed if you sold the shares.

Today's Company: Scenario Learning Inc.
A Market In Safety: After working in educational publishing, Brian Taylor thought that there was a need for safety training for school personnel. In early 2001, he established Scenario Learning in Norwood's Hamilton County Business Incubator to develop and market online training courses. The company now employs about ten people and uses numerous independent contractors for its projects.
In The Know: Scenario Learning released its product, SafeSchools, later in 2001. The program is a variety of online safety-related courses designed for educators and support staff covering topics such as bloodborne pathogens, bullying, child abuse, school violence and transportation safety. Each component is written by an expert in the field and lets participants respond to true-to-life situations.
Spreading The Word: This school year, SafeSchools will be used by almost 50 school districts in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Alabama and California. The program was named the recommended safety instructional system by the American Association of School Administrators.
Growth Partner: In February 2003, Scenario Learning formed a partnership with Colorado-based educational publisher Sopris West. In addition to investing in the local company, Sopris West will help develop additional SafeSchool content, offer in-person training, and help distribute the program.
