Suddenly, it's wide open
Nine seeds are history after first round

MASON - On Monday, the defending champion in the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters, Carlos Moya, was ousted in the first round.
On Tuesday, it was the runner-up's turn.
Lleyton Hewitt, who has fallen from No. 1 to No. 6 in the world rankings, went down in three sets to No. 68 Xavier Malisse.
"I just didn't feel great out there," Hewitt said. "And that really hurt my game."
Meanwhile, third-seeded Roger Federer, who won Wimbledon in July, saved seven match points and defeated Australian Scott Draper 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10) in a back-and-forth match. Federer became the first player on the ATP Tour to save seven match points and win the match since Marcelo Rios accomplished the feat in January 2002 against Ivan Ljubicic.
In all, nine of 16 seeded players lost in the first round, including 14th-seeded Gustavo Kuerten, the 2001 Cincinnati champion, who was beaten in straight sets Tuesday by Mariano Zabaleta, 6-4, 6-0.
The second-round matches of interest today include:
American James Blake vs. 11th seed Sjeng Schalken at 1 p.m.
Argentine Guillermo Coria, seeded sixth, vs. Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the 25th-ranked player, at 11 a.m.
American Todd Martin vs. Feliciano Lopez, following the Coria-Kafelnikov match on Grandstand Court.
Malisse vs. Mardy Fish at 7 p.m.
Seventh-seeded Andy Roddick vs. Ljubicic following the Blake-Schalken match.
