When walking around Clifton's Gaslight District, you can experience a little piece of Cincinnati's past. From the breathtaking Gothic Revival homes on Clifton Avenue to the renovated castles on Lafayette and the vista of the west side from Mount Storm Park, there's so much to see, even when you have so little time.
What's so great about it?
If you park your car at Mount Storm Park and set off through the surrounding neighborhoods, it takes less than an hour to make the loop. You'll get to take a look at some of the best historic architecture in the city and, if you're lucky, chat up some of your fellow walkers, who seem to flock from all over to this scenic neighborhood.
What will I see?
In addition to the jaw-dropping homes along Clifton and Lafayette, there are plenty of other neighborhood fixtures for feasting your eyes. At the corner of Clifton and McAlpin avenues, stop and admire Clifton Elementary School (built in 1906) and take a breather by the fountain in front. Then check out the beautiful churches along Clifton, including the Mosque of Cinti.
At the beginning or end of your walk, wander around Mount Storm Park, which once was the estate of a Clifton mayor. It offers a dynamite view of the west side, and is still home to the Temple of Love, which is the last remnant of the old estate.
If you're a gardening fan, you'll love the landscaping on the well-manicured lawns of the Gaslight neighborhood. There are also plenty of trees along the entire walk, which makes for great summer shade and autumn colors.
Not to mention the human scenery. There are always people walking, running and biking along these sidewalks in the evenings, so be sure to wave hello. And if you're looking, there are definitely worse places to find attractive young professionals with cute dogs.
Do I have to be in shape?
Even though the entire walk is short and paved, there are two sizable hills on Lafayette and McAlpin avenues. If you stop to check out some of the public areas or rest along the way, the hills shouldn't be too much trouble.
