Smart Mouth

You heard it here first

Just In

Blackbird Food Co. has made it easier for us to eat healthy green soybeans with its new freeze-dried Edamame Crunchies. Edamame (ed-ah-MAH-may), the Japanese word for green soybeans, are high in protein and low in saturated fat. The organic snacks are available in three flavors: Original, Wasabi & Lemon and Garlic & Onion. Blackbird also offers a line of other vegetable and fruit Crunchies, including corn, mixed veggies, raspberry and strawberry. Available at Jungle Jim's Market and at www.blackbirdfood.com for about $6.39 per 5.5 ounces.

What is this?

Tomatillos look like small green tomatoes with a papery husk. Tomatillos have a pleasant, tart flavor and are used in salsa, guacamole and other Mexican dishes. They may be used raw, but also may be roasted or blanched in water briefly. Fresh tomatillos will keep for up to a month in the refrigerator.

Hot Date

Alice Waters, owner of famed Chez Panisse in Berkeley, Calif., and called "the most influential person in American food" by The New York Times, will appear at a special dinner at Smith-Berry Vineyard and Winery in New Castle, Ky. (near Louisville) Sept. 5. Prepared by Kentucky chefs Kathy Cary, Amber McCool and Ouita Michel, the dinner benefits the Community Farm Alliance. Tickets are $250 for dinner and reception ($175 for dinner only). Reservations and more information: (502) 845-7091.

Cool Stuff . . . we made on a George Foreman Grill

Our favorite way to reheat pizza is to use the G.F. Just put two same-size pieces together like a sandwich in the preheated grill. Check after several minutes. Thin crust and traditional crust take the least amount of time.

Carla Litmer, Edgewood
