Francisco Miller, 18, from Powell, Ohio, moves a desk in his dorm room at Dorsey Hall at Miami University on Thursday. Miller, a freshman, was moving in a day early to beat the move-in rush that started at 6 a.m. Friday.

Move-in days are a rite of passage at any university, and in Greater Cincinnati they are going on now at several schools. In addition to students with armloads of clothes and possessions, proud and/or relieved parents are also a common sight on move-in days. And when else can one find students actually involved in physical labor as they try to make the furniture in those tiny dorm rooms fit just right?

Classes begin at Northern Kentucky and Xavier universities and the College of Mount St. Joseph on Monday, and at Miami University on Tuesday. Thomas More and Wilmington colleges started classes this week, while the University of Kentucky begins Wednesday. As usual, the University of Cincinnati will be the last local school to begin fall classes, on Sept. 24. Ohio State University begins the same day.
