Shopping for school keeps pace

Industry notes: Retailing

By Randy Tucker
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The back-to-school shopping season, which can extend into early October, continues to yield positive gains for Greater Cincinnati retailers and their counterparts nationwide, according to recent study by Junior Achievement Inc.

The survey - from the world's largest organization dedicated to educating young people about business, economics and free enterprise - showed that 62 percent of teens say they or their families are buying the same amount or more of back-to-school supplies this year, compared to last year. The results were based on a demographically weighted survey of 624 teens from age 13 to 18, conducted Aug. 8-22.

Meanwhile, 28 percent said they were buying less and 10 percent said they were buying "none" or were "not sure," according to the survey. The data come on the heels of a positive August consumer confidence number from the Conference Board, as well as early indications from some major retailers that their back-to-school sales are proving successful.

"A few months ago, there was a great deal of concern that back-to-school sales would be down," said David S. Chernow, president and CEO of the national Junior Achievement.

"But teens seem to be reinforcing data out there that consumer demand is strong this back-to-school season."
