Good Things Happening

Hospital opens reading nook

Allen Howard

On Thursday, a reading nook was dedicated in the waiting room of Cincinnati Children's Hospital's Pediatric Primary Care Center.

Dr. Tom DeWitt, director of the Division of General and Community Pediatrics, said the area, known as Margaret's Place, has a large three-dimensional "Tree of Knowledge," where children can sit and read.

"This is part of Reach Out Read, which is a national literacy program," DeWitt said. "The purpose of that program is to encourage parents to encourage their children to read."

A flat-screen monitor opposite the nook will show videos of people reading to children.

Minority program

Daniel Williams, who enrolled in the University of Cincinnati's Minority Student Development program four weeks ago, is the first to complete the program.

Williams, 27, is a fourth-year medical student at Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tenn.

"I chose to participate in the UC Department of Surgery's Minority Student Program because of UC's strong reputation for training excellent surgeons."

The program is designed to attract minority students to UC's surgical residency.

Marge Daley Day

It was Marge Daley Day at Mount Notre Dame High School Wednesday as staff, students and neighbors celebrated Daley's 85th birthday.

Daley has worked in the cafeteria for 25 years.

College freshman extols mentoring

One piece of advice Melynda Johnson, a freshman at the University of Toledo, would like to pass on to high school students: "Reach out and mentor younger students and share school experiences with them."

Melynda, 17, was among the first group of students at Purcell Marian High School, Evanston, who developed an educational partnership with Kilgour Elementary School, Hyde Park.

Others were: Andrea Carter, Erika Zanders and Mitchell Morris, all seniors.

"I probably received as much from the experience of mentoring third-graders as they did," Melynda said.

The mentors were selected by the Purcell Marian faculty and administration based upon their outstanding leadership skills and academic and extracurricular performances.

Melynda is the daughter of Linda Wright, West End.
