Here's how the votes were lined up Wednesday on the $12 million deal to build a parking garage for the Kroger Co. Three members of Cincinnati City Council were in favor, one was opposed, one was leaning against, and four were undecided. A vote is scheduled for Sept. 10.
The breakdown:
Laketa Cole (D): Undecided. "When we did the Convergys deal, I asked for some guidelines and policies and procedures on proposals where we're asked for money. I cannot make an informed decision without that information."
Minette Cooper (D): Undecided. "What I've heard from Kroger sounds almost like a threat, but that's second, third and seventh-hand information. The initial negotiation is with the (city) administration.''
John Cranley (D): In favor. "I'm as supportive as I've ever been. As I said before, I think the way they handled this could have been better. But it's not worth losing the 18th-largest company in the country."
David Crowley (D): Undecided. "I'm the kind of guy who takes a little longer with these things. I haven't come to a definite decision yet, but I'm coming to understand it better."
Pat DeWine (R): Undecided. "I haven't seen the deal. I want to see the deal."
Chris Monzel (R): Leaning against. "Why don't we learn the lessons of Convergys and apply them to Kroger?"
David Pepper (D): In favor. "We've only made it more attractive by lowering the price, and by getting Kroger to agree to work with College Hill about that site."
Alicia Reece (D): Opposed. "The Convergys issue came up, and a majority of the downtown money has already been used. It's been borrowed against. At this time, we're floating too many bonds."
James R. Tarbell (C): In favor. "I'd like to see it pass 9-0, and I'm going to spend the next week trying to convince my colleagues who are on the fence."
