Good Things Happening

Car show drives used book sale

Allen Howard

The Green Township Public Library is setting aside a weekend for the classics - and that doesn't mean just books.

On Sept. 19-20, the library will host a Used Book Sale and the "Best of the West" Car Show.

The book sale will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The car show is from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 20 and will include voting for favorite vehicles. The library is at 6525 Bridgetown Road.

Trophies for best of show, people's choice and librarians' choice will be awarded.

"This is a chance to mix classic books with classic cars," said Marya Hunt, Green Township reference librarian.

The events are sponsored by the Friends of the Public Library. Proceeds support programs at the library.

Fund-raising trek

Glenda Randall is fueled up and ready to start a 12,000-mile car trek across the country today to raise money for women with a fatal lung disease.

"It will take about two months to complete the trip," said Randall, development director for the LAM Foundation. She plans to visit nearly 50 cities, meeting LAM patients and their families. Jake Sweeney Automotive is providing a car for her to use.

LAM stands for lymphangioleiomyomatosis, a lung disease that affects only women.

"When the father of a former LAM patient called and thanked me, that was reason enough for me to make the trip," Randall said.

LAM, based in Cincinnati, was founded in 1995 by Sue Byrnes, whose daughter suffered from the disease.

To donate: 777-6889.

Summerfair poster

Applications for the Summerfair Inc. poster competition are being accepted through Nov. 21.

OUR KIDS

You might not find it in the Boy Scout code of honor, but Seth English is a living example of how hard work pays off.

Seth, 16, along with 32 fellow Scouts, refurbished a nature trail at Mercer Elementary School in the Forest Hills School District for his Eagle Scout project. He was honored with the rank last week.

"I am proud of the project and proud of the rank," Seth said. "It was fun for us. We cleaned and covered the trail with chopped wood mulch. We put in steps to a creek."

Seth is a junior at Turpin High School. He is a member of Troop 112 at Mount Washington Presbyterian Church.

He is the son of John and Erin English, Anderson Township.
