'Mother of God' art on display

U. of DAYTON - The University of Dayton will be among a few venues to exhibit a collection of 38 pieces of art spanning the early fourth century through the late 20th century devoted to Mary, mother of Christ.

UD officials say the multicultural, multicentury exhibit called "The Mother of God: Art Celebrates Mary" will be open today through Nov. 10 in the Roesch Library's first-floor gallery and seventh-floor Marian Library gallery.

Viewing is free to the public 8:30 a.m.- 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Pieces include oil on canvas and copper, tempera and gold on panel, carved sections of sarcophagi in marble and statues in bronze, ivory, lead and soapstone.

School officials say private donations will cover the cost of transporting, insuring and securing the art.

The collection is normally housed in the Vatican in Rome, where many of the pieces are in areas accessible only to scholars.
