HAMILTON - Twin brothers arrested on charges that they plotted to kill their brothers have been placed on probation.
Judge David Niehaus of Butler County Juvenile Court put the boys, both 14, on probation Friday and ordered psychological treatment and counseling for them.
The twins will return to their home in Madison Township, near Middletown, either on Sept. 23 or in about 60 days after a stay in a group home. They will remain at the Butler County Juvenile Detention Center until Niehaus decides whether they should go to a group home first or return to their own home.
Niehaus ruled last month that the twins were incompetent to stand trial on two charges each of conspiracy to commit aggravated murder. They were evaluated by three psychologists, two of whom determined the twins were incompetent to stand trial.
The teens were arrested in May after their mother went to police with a secretly made recording of a conversation in which they allegedly plotted to kill their two brothers, ages 15 and 10. One of the boys told Niehaus that he and his brother never intended to kill their brothers.
"We were just going to scare them," the boy said, adding that his older brother had been "hitting" on them and they didn't want their younger brother to do the same.
Their mother said Friday that she was happy that her sons would be returning home and doesn't believe they need to go to a group home.
