Interesting matchups await Colorado, Wake Forest
Saturday's TV games
Fresno State (1-1) at No. 1 Oklahoma (2-0)
Time: 3:30 p.m.
Line: Oklahoma by 28 1/2.
Points: Sooners offense still trying to find a rhythm. Bulldogs will need flawless game to stay close.
East Carolina (0-2) at No. 2 Miami (2-0)
Time/TV: 7 p.m./ESPN2.
Line: Miami by 41.
Points: The Pirates are last in the nation in rushing defense, which should lead to a big day for Miami's Frank Gore. Things could get even worse for the Pirates if LB Chris Moore, questionable with a troublesome knee, can't play. WR Terrance Copper has 23 catches, but QB Desmond Robinson must find a way to get him into the end zone. Hurricanes CB Antrel Rolle won't make that easy.
Hawaii (1-0) at No. 4 Southern Cal (2-0)
Time: 4 p.m.
Line: Southern Cal by 21.
Points: Hawaii's wide-open passing attack takes on Southern California's speed-laden defense in one of the day's most intriguing matchups. But the battle downfield won't materialize if the Warriors' youthful line can't protect QB Timmy Chang. He must beware of Trojans DE Omar Nazel, who could be effective blitzing or dropping into coverage. Trojans QB Matt Leinart wasted no time making WR Mike Williams his go-to man. The job of trying to contain Williams probably will belong to CB Kevin Millhouse. Leinart might need to develop other receivers and tune the Trojans' spotty ground attack.
Arkansas (1-0) at No. 5 Texas (1-0)
Time: Noon.
Line: Texas by 13 1/2.
Points: Texas is still breaking in QB Chance Mock, who didn't get much field time against New Mexico State, thanks to four TDs from the defense and return teams. He must get in sync quickly with WR Roy Williams and TE Bo Scaife. RB Cedric Benson could become acquainted with Arkansas FS Tony Bua, who needs his teammates to do a better job tackling in front of him. The Razorbacks can show many offensive looks with athletic Matt Jones and veteran Ryan Sorahan alternating at quarterback. But the key to containing Arkansas will be shutting down TB Cedric Cobbs. LB Derrick Johnson will lead that effort.
Massachusetts (1-0) at No. 6 Kansas State (3-0)
Time: 2 p.m.
Line: Kansas State by 54.
Points: Wildcats QB Ell Roberson (hand) will sit out.
South Carolina (2-0) at No. 8 Georgia (2-0)
Time/TV: 3:30 p.m./Ch. 12, 7.
Line: Georgia by 13 1/2.
Points: The Gamecocks' strength, the SEC's second-leading defense, could take advantage of Georgia's weakness, a lack of consistency in the running game that has led to red-zone inefficiency. South Carolina made progress in the Virginia win creating space for RB Daccus Turman, but QB Dondrial Pinkins needs his receivers to stop dropping balls. Bulldogs DE David Pollack won't give him many unimpeded throws.
Georgia Tech (1-1) at No. 10 Florida State (2-0)
Time: 8 p.m.
Line: Florida State by 24.
Points: Florida State is fortunate RB Greg Jones' rebuilt knee is holding together, because the Seminoles have had trouble keeping his backups healthy. With Leon Washington (elbow) and Lorenzo Booker (ankle) out, Willie Reid will move back to his original position after a stint at receiver. The good news is QB Chris Rix and his receivers are clicking. Georgia Tech will send DE Eric Henderson and LB Keyaron Fox after Rix. QB Reggie Ball made a successful home debut against Auburn but has yet to win in hostile surroundings. His nearly non-existent run support and Seminoles LB Kendyll Pope won't make his job easy.
Western Illinois (2-0) at No. 11 LSU (2-0)
Time: 8 p.m.
Line: LSU by 52.
Points: Can WIU come closer to the Tigers than Arizona did?
Ball State (1-1) at No. 12 Pittsburgh (1-0)
Time: 12:30 p.m.
Line: Pittsburgh by 30 1/2.
Points: QB Rod Rutherford starting again for Panthers.
UNLV (1-1) at No. 15 Wisconsin (2-0)
Time/TV: Noon/ESPN2.
Line: Wisconsin by 20.
Points: RB Anthony Davis and WR Lee Evans were solid bricks of the finest Wisconsin cheddar last week, but the Swiss-cheese defense that kept Akron in the game made their performances necessary. Badgers DB Jim Leonhard and his companions in the secondary must keep the clamps on as QB Kurt Nantkes tries to work magic with WR Earvin Johnson. UNLV RB Larry Croom (6.1 yards a carry) also must have a big game, though he could be slowed by a bruised thigh. LB Adam Seward and DB Ruschard Dodd-Masters must contain QB Jim Sorgi.
Utah State (0-2) at No. 16 Arizona State (1-0)
Time: 10 p.m.
Line: Arizona State by 27.
Points: The Sun Devils hope to shake off sluggishness from opener against Northern Arizona.
Washington State (1-1) at No. 17 Colorado (2-0)
Time: 3:30 p.m.
Line: Colorado by 4 1/2.
Points: Cougars must overcome the disappointment of the Notre Dame loss as they hit the road again. The Buffaloes continue a treacherous nonconference slate that concludes next week at Florida State.
Penn State (1-1) at No. 18 Nebraska (2-0)
Time/TV: 8 p.m./Ch. 9, 2.
Line: Nebraska by 10.
Points: Neither Nebraska's Jammal Lord nor Penn State's Zack Mills have produced big passing numbers. Lord is a superior ground threat and has I-backs David Horne and Josh Davis to help him. If Mills fails to get WR Tony Johnson involved, RB Austin Scott will have to contend with LB Demorrio Williams all night.
No. 19 Iowa (2-0) at Iowa State (2-0)
Time: 12:30 p.m.
Line: Iowa by 4.
Points: Fueling the optimism of Iowa fans hoping this is the day they end five years of frustration against their in-state rival is one simple fact - Seneca Wallace is gone. Hawkeyes LB Chad Greenway will lead the effort to befuddle Iowa State QB Austin Flynn, a redshirt freshman.
Florida A&M (1-1) at No. 20 Florida (1-1)
Time: 6 p.m.
Line: Florida by 46.
Points: Chomp!
Purdue (0-1) at No. 21 Wake Forest (2-0)
Time/TV: Noon/ESPN.
Line: Even.
Points: Wake's scheme poses a different problem from the Bowling Green aerial assault that undid Purdue last week. Expect SS Stuart Schweigert to spend a lot of time near the line of scrimmage, which could create chances over the top for Deacons QB Cory Randolph. Boilermakers QB Kyle Orton still must use his controlled passing game to rest his defense.
Rest of the Top 25
No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 23 TCU, No. 24 Washington and No. 25 Texas A&M are idle.
