Class Above is that in Juvenile Fillies

By George Rorrer
Enquirer contributor

Now they saw Class Above, then they didn't Saturday in the Kentucky Cup $100,000 Juvenile Fillies Stakes at Turfway Park.

Class Above, one of the brightest stars in trainer Bob Baffert's stable, took over almost from the gate under Edgar Prado and rolled to a 16-length victory over D. Wayne Lukas-trained Renaissance Lady and jockey Pat Day.

Baffert said he told Prado to "let her run a little bit because this was going to be her final race before the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (Oct. 25 at Santa Anita). It was just what I wanted."

Lukas said: "We were second best, but I was pleased, and thought she ran well."

In the Kentucky Cup Juvenile, Mr. Jester was awarded the victory after an objection was lodged by jockey Shane Sellers against Prado and the speedy Pomeroy. Pomeroy's trainer, Patrick Biancone, said, "He pulls himself up all the time. It was too bad he got disqualified. We'll have to see what's next."

In the $175,000 Turfway Breeders' Cup, Prado rode Smok 'n Frolic to a 3 1/2 length victory over Awesome Humor.

In the Kentucky Cup Sprint, Carmelo Velasquez guided Cajun Beat to victory over Clock Stopper.

LITTLE BROWN JUG: Cane Pace winner No Pan Intended, Whatanartist and Yankee Cruiser were installed as favorites in the three divisions of the second leg of the Pacing Triple Crown. Arts Chip, First Foxy and Artesian drew the rail positions for the race Thursday at the Delaware (Ohio) County Fairgrounds.
